What Is A Cmount Fitting?


Cmount is a mount type of that classifies how a lens fits to a camera. In the world of surveillance these identifies with the c-mount, box style camera. Mostly c-mount cameras do not come with a lens. You do have to purchase the lens you need for your video shot in your CCTV setup. There are all types of lens that fit on to a c-mount camera. You can find a c-mount type of lens to be found on 16mm movie cameras, television cameras, and trinocular microscope phototubes, and of course surveillance cameras. However, cmount lens has a male type thread which mates with a female thread on the camera. The threads for c-mount cameras are normally 1 inch or 25mm in diameter. The threads are so fine that there are 32 threads per inch. So there are many threads to ensure a tight fitting for the lens. To attach a lens to a c-mount camera you would just screw it on like any other screw type device. But this is the standard fitting for all of the industry standard CCTV lenses.



What is a CS-mount Fitting?


A cs-mount fitting is a special fitting that works more like an adapter for a lens. The lens does not have to be any different than any other lens. It is just most lenses that do not fit all cameras does not mean it cannot work on another camera. You simply just need to change the fitting. Although there are lenses that were made for certain applications that just do not work with other devices. For example, a lense made for TV cameras may not always fit movie cameras, as some lack provision or focus or even a set exposure. So there is a chance that some lenses are not made to fit with other cameras, but the cs-mount just enables certain cameras to fit onto box style c-mount security cameras.

If you were wondering why c-mount cameras come without lenses, it is due to the nature of why the camera was made. Engineers in China, never intended to make c-mount, box style cameras that was priopertary from the get go. They made c-mount cameras initially to be customizable for the end-user. The end-user has total control over how the camera works best for his/her application. Naturally, when you think of video you need to know what lens type you need. There are no lenses usually sold with c-mount cameras, because the user needs to have control or know what they want from a lens to get the perfect shot. There are fixed lenses and varifocal lenses for c-mount cameras. The fixed lenses start as low as 2.5mm and go up to a 25mm setting. Most users in the surveillance field use a range of fixed lens from 2.5mm, 3.5mm, 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 9mm, and 12mm. Fixed lenses are however, not as popular as most varifocal lenses. Varifocal lens gives you an all in one solution. You see c-mount varifocal lenses ranging from 4mm-9mm, 2.8mm-12mm, 5mm-100mm and so on. Each one of these lens works different in the ratio of field-of-vision vs. distance. In certain zones of CCTV applications different cameras need different lenses, this is what made having a c-mount camera absolutely necessary. You could do what ever you wanted with the camera.
